PhD position in Neuroscience

Location:

Department of Systems Neuroscience, University Medical Center Hamburg Eppendorf

The Neuropharmacology Lab (Head: PD Dr. Jan Haaker) invites applications for a PhD position in the field of neuroscience and neuropharmacology, focusing on the crosstalk between observational learning, interoception and treatment expectation. This interdisciplinary research project is part of the Collaborative Research Centre "Treatment Expectation" (Sonderforschungsbereich 289 https://treatment-expectation.de funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG) and closely interacts with a project at the University of Marburg (by Prof. Dr. Christiane Melzig).

Project overview:

This research project aims to elucidate the mechanisms of how we learn from the experience of others through observational learning and this forms our expectation of our own treatment experience. The project combines functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and psychophysiology (with a focus on breathing and lung function) with pharmacological challenges in humans. The project could start in the summer or fall 2024 and ends in 2028.

What we offer:

  • An engaging research environment for fMRI experiments in the Department of Systems Neuroscience (Head: Prof .Dr. Christian Büchel)
  • Mentorship and a supportive group in the Neuropharmacology Lab
  • Opportunities for professional development and networking as a member of the Collaborative Research Centre
  • Tailored postgraduate courses to complement your skills as a PhD student

Your profile:

  • Master's degree in neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science or related disciplines
  • Proficiency in research methodology (including basic knowledge of programming languages) and statistical analysis (e.g. Matlab, R)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • High motivation for interdisciplinary research

Aplication:

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary depends on experience and is based on German regulations (TVöD-VKA-13 for PhD positions with the factor 75%). The project starting optimally in summer 2024.
